  • Bewick's wren defending nest box from garter snake. I had been photographing this nest box and its family of nesting wrens on the porch of a vacant cabin along the Sunshine Coast of BC for several days. On this particular day I noticed that the adult wrens were giving constant alarm calls and hovering frantically outside of the box. Wasn't quite sure what was going on, but when a snake's tail suddenly pushed out the entrance of the box (was already inside) I rushed over and pried open the top to the box and pulled the snake out. It had already eaten one of the fledglings and had another in its mouth, with only the feet protruding; I let the snake escape. Though this was a natural occurrence, my wife and I were really upset, which is saying nothing as to state of mind of the adult wrens. The next morning as I was walking up the hill into the forest I thought I heard the faintest sound of a fledging crying and looking over towards the box I was surprised to see that the adult wrens were again bringing food into the nest box! Delighted at this amazing turn of events, I quickly hung the box from a rafter and to our knowledge the nesting pair were successful in fledging this last remaining bird. Apparently it had buried itself in the bottom of the nest material, escaping the snake long enough until we intervened.
